The US219 New Highway Construction – Earthwork Phase represents the first phase of a new 11-mile, four-lane highway from Somerset to Meyersdale, Pennsylvania. It includes mass excavation, the construction of the Pine Hill Bridge, preparation work for five other bridges, and the demolition of two bridges over railroads. This large-scale project requires an average of 150 daily workers. The earthwork portion utilizes trucks ranging up to 150 tons to move approximately 13 million cubic yards of earth — as much as 50,000 cubic yards in a single day. It also involves installing drainage systems along the entire 11 miles. Since this project covers such a vast expanse of land, it requires coordination with more than 30 key agencies (government, utilities, railroads, and local community).
What makes it interesting?
This project was a real boost to the local community, with approximately 40 percent of the workers from Somerset County and utilizing almost 100 local businesses for supplies. On this project, Joseph B. Fay is utilizing drones to remotely view the site and to generate weekly progress reports, 3D imaging to analyze quantities and ensure grade/slope accuracy, and GPS to improve grading productions and efficiency.
