Aaron Allshouse is the Senior Technical Product Manager of HeavyBid leveraging over a decade of experience at HCSS to continue making HeavyBid the best estimating solution. Starting off in support and quickly specializing in HeavyBid, he has spent the majority of his HCSS career working with customers to make their HeavyBid experience as positive as possible. This continues as he works with customers ensuring their needs are met while preparing HeavyBid for the future.

Labor shortages, constant regulation changes, a fluctuating economy — the construction industry doesn’t sit still. That’s why, at HCSS, we’ve always turned to technology to help tackle these issues. With every shift in policy or new normal, we believe it’s the key to staying ahead in the ever-changing world of heavy civil.

Recently, we had the opportunity to show students at California State University, Chico, just how impactful construction software is within the industry. Amanda Ayles, our Product Manager for HeavyBid, led the discussion — walking them through how their workflows will look once they graduate and how our software tools help contractors (and future contractors) make more accurate estimates for big civil and infrastructure projects.

“Technology is reshaping the industry at every level — it isn’t just a bonus anymore — it’s a must in today’s competitive environment. It’s rewarding to share how software and technology can help construction teams manage projects more efficiently, predict issues before they arise, and reduce waste.”

— Amanda Ayles | Product Manager, HCSS

No strangers to the construction industry…or winning — Chico State's Construction Management Department students had another impressive showing at this year's annual Associated Schools of Construction Competition in Sparks, Nevada. They brought home first place in multiple categories for the second straight year.

Coming off a winning season, Ayles spoke with the students about the importance of adopting technology early in their careers and showed them the possibilities once they exit school. No, hypotheticals. No, imaginary scenarios. She demonstrated how HCSS software works in real-world situations. Students got a unique, close-up look at how tech can make construction projects more efficient, precise, and profitable.

Whether through programs like HCSS University, where universities can get their hands on real construction software, or events like these, where students can hear from industry vets — HCSS continues its commitment to preparing the next generation of construction professionals.

By linking classroom learning with industry practices, HCSS gives students valuable insights into construction technology and shows them how to stay ahead in a rapidly changing field. With real-world examples and practical applications of the latest technology, HCSS is helping students build the skills they'll need to succeed in the future!

Leveling Up the Industry Through Collaboration

We know that the future of construction depends on the next generation of professionals. Partnerships and collaboration are important for them to get the most out of their careers. As organizations like HCSS, Bulk Exchange, and CalCIMA work together to bring value to the students, we can provide students with hands-on learning experiences — demonstrating how seamless workflows happen in the real world.

“Bulk Exchange is revolutionizing job bid communicating by seamlessly connecting suppliers and purchasers through a productive and convenient search engine.”

— Nick Steinberg | Program Director, Concrete Industry Management

Chris Souder, Head of Chico’s Construction Management program, put it perfectly when he said, “It’s invaluable to them to interact directly with professionals who can share real-world knowledge and advice. It brings theory to life and deepens their engagement with the field.”

These types of in-person connections are so valuable — they give students a chance to go beyond the classroom and build relationships that could kickstart their careers. Nick Steinberg, who runs Chico’s Concrete Industry Management (CIM) course, also pointed out how key it is for students to meet industry professionals. “When students connect with professionals, they don’t just learn from textbooks. They’re building relationships and seeing the future of construction through the eyes of people who’ve helped shape it.”

A Bright Future for Construction Professionals

Events like these are helping set up the next generation of heavy civil construction professionals. HCSS and its partners are all about giving students the skills and knowledge they need to excel in a constantly evolving industry, with a big focus on tech and sustainability. Thanks to Chico State’s awesome Construction Management program, students are getting a solid foundation and are ready to jump into the workforce, ready to help shape the future of construction!
