The Dancing Bear Pedestrian Tunnel is an 98-foot-long private pedestrian and service tunnel between the Dancing Bear Building (unfinished) and The Charthouse Building located across Durant street. The tunnel is being constructed from the Dancing Bear basement – 2 levels below grade – to the finished basement of the Charthouse, which houses a wine cellar and cinema. Access to the basement is via stairs and empty elevator / car shafts. All construction equipment and tunnel materials had to be lowered 90’into the basement via the empty elevator shaft. This required disassembly of some pieces of equipment. The tunnel crosses beneath an existing 20-inch water main and an 8-inch water main. The 11-foot-tall by 9-foot-wide tunnel will cost $1.5 million once complete. Construction carried out during the ski season in Aspen, with no to little impact on the public.
What makes it interesting?
Private facility constructed through a public right of way. Very limited access to the basement — via stairs and down an empty elevator shaft — getting tunnel equipment into the basement highly challenging. Challenge of removing spoils from basement.
