The Highway 88 Carson Pass Project used controlled blasting techniques to lay back the existing vertical rock slope to a 3/4:1 slope, eliminating the loose vertical rock slope and resulting in a competent pre-split slope with less fractured rock. (Project overran on quantity due to the unstable rock.) This project was completed without road closures and with minimal impact to traffic.
What makes it interesting?
The project was located at the top of the Carson Pass on Highway 88. The vertical rock slope was a continued safety problem and major maintenance issue with rock falling from the vertical slope into the traveled roadway.
How HCSS Software assisted with this project
Department of Transportation work is very competitive, and HeavyBid helped streamline the process for a short bid time. HeavyJob was used to manage the highway project in a remote location. It made it easier for the crew to manage the project with limited access or communication.
