HCSS helps create the first Construction Appreciation Week
In September 2018, HCSS and I Build America introduced the first annual National Construction Appreciation Week (September 17-21, 2018) to foster a positive dialogue about the construction workforce and to say thanks to those hard-working men and women building our infrastructure every day.
The holiday is official — it’s registered with the National Day Calendar (https://nationaldaycalendar.com/national-construction-appreciation-week-third-week-in-september-monday-through-friday/) — and we celebrated the inaugural week with construction workers across Houston.
On Sept. 19, HCSS employees delivered ice cream and popsicles to job sites, and throughout the entire week, I Build America partnered for a discount with BreWingz Restaurant and Bar.
We ran a social media campaign in which workers and community members were encouraged to post photos and videos on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn with the hashtags #ThanksForBuilding and #ConstructionAppreciationWeek.
I Build America also hosted two contests leading up to Construction Appreciation Week. In the Kids of Construction contest, the O’Hara family of Houston won for their photos of son Matthew already getting into building (and demolition).
In the Dream Builder contest, Stacey Gunthorpe of Albuquerque, NM, won for her nomination of Bixby Electric Inc. owner Bruce Bixby, who hired her in her 30s and taught her the ins and outs of his business.
Both contest winners were awarded a $500 gift card to Academy Sports + Outdoors, as well as an I Build America-branded YETI cooler for the Dream Builder winner and an IBA backpack filled with toys for the Kids of Construction winner.

I Build America and HCSS plans to expand our National Construction Appreciation Week efforts to the rest of the country in 2019.
