The Big Four Bridge was originally completed in 1895 and carried trains across the Ohio River between Louisville, Kentucky, and Jeffersonville, Indiana. After sitting idle for decades, the Big Four was re-purposed to carry pedestrian and bike traffic between Waterfront Park in downtown Louisville to downtown Jeffersonville. The first phase of the project demolished the remnants of the existing railroad and provided significant rehabilitation to the structure itself. Part of the rehabilitation included replacing more than 40,000 rivets with modern, high-strength bolts. The second phase included installation of pre-cast deck sections and a 2-inch overlay of epoxy-concrete.
What makes it interesting?
The Big Four is accessed by a unique helical walkway on the Kentucky side and a new concrete access ramp on the Indiana approach. In the two years since its reopening, the Big Four Bridge has been traveled by more than half a million pedestrians and serves as the crown jewel of Louisville’s Waterfront.
