Gordie Howe International Bridge

Project Description

In July 2018, Fluor Corp and AECOM announced that they had successfully won a joint bid to design and construct the Gordie Howe International Bridge, an international project linking the U.S. and Canada. Specifically, the bridge runs from Detroit, Michigan, to Windsor, Ontario, Canada, connecting Interstate 96 to Interstate 75.

What makes it interesting?

As the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America at 1.5 miles, the 6-year Gordie Howe project is destined to become one of the busiest surface routes for international trade. A major milestone for the Great Lakes region, the bridge stands at a whopping 722 feet in height and carries a cost of $4.68 billion (USD). Another fun fact is that the bridge tower shape reflects the curvature of a hockey stick in a slap shot.

How HCSS Software assisted with the Project.

A global engineering and construction firm based out of Houston, TX, Fluor Corporation has been a leader in the industry for over 70 years. They also rely on HCSS HeavyBid for bidding on jobs of this magnitude. On that same note, AECOM (with HQ in Los Angeles, CA) is another key player that works on projects in various sectors such as infrastructure, transportation, buildings, water, and environmental services. AECOM also used HeavyBid, as well as HCSS Cloud. For the Gordie Howe Bridge, the two companies worked together in tandem after winning their separate bids to complete the project.

"With safety as our top priority, we will continue to work together to deliver this much needed infrastructure to the thousands of eager travelers ready to cross North America’s longest cable-stayed bridge."

- Charl van Niekerk, CEO of Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority
